Took a few days away from work a few weeks ago in order to get a much needed break. The past couple of months at work were hell for me in terms of workload. I had to spend long hours at work just to be able to get rid of all the “pending” stuff on my desk. Anyway, enough words said about work.
Some of you know by now that I’m a huge John Lennon fan. So what I did one morning was to take a trip up to the Upper West Side of Manhattan, to visit the place where he once lived and where he, unfortunately, also died. I’ve long thought about making the trip but except for a quick “drive by” or two to the place through the kindness of cousins, I have not had the chance to really visit the place in all the many years I’ve lived here.
For me, a “real” visit to a place involves getting off a vehicle in order to spend a few moments walking around a particular spot or monument, to get a chance to internalize and appreciate an area’s atmosphere and surroundings, and to reflect on the event(s) that took place there. Thus, within an hour after I left my place, I was finally at the spot I’ve long wanted to be, standing in front of the building where a rock legend once lived, the Dakota.
Standing at the northwest corner of Central Park West and West 72nd Street, the Dakota opened its doors in 1884 as an apartment building that catered to New York’s wealthy. It served as John Lennon’s residence from 1973 to 1980. John Lennon moved to the United States from England in 1971. He fell in love with New York City because it was a place where people generally respected his privacy. In fact, his widow, Yoko Ono, and son, Sean, still live in the Dakota.
The Lennons reportedly bought the entire 7th floor of the building. In the photo above, the 7th floor is marked with the long metal balcony.
The photo above shows the infamous entrance to the driveway leading into the Dakota’s courtyard. I say this entrance is “infamous” because it was by those gates where John Lennon was fatally shot by Marc David Chapman after he (Lennon) had gotten off his car to greet some fans that fateful night of December 8, 1980.
Across the street from the Dakota is Central Park. And within a stone’s throw from the Dakota is a section of the park called Strawberry Fields. The main attraction at Strawberry Fields is this mural shown above that’s lying on the ground. In its very center is the word “Imagine”, named after a song John Lennon wrote and issued in 1971 that longed for a world where men live in peace and harmony.
It was said that Ms. Ono wanted the mural to be placed on the ground rather than on a raised monument so as to be in keeping with Mr. Lennon’s ideals that no man should be above any other, that we are all equal in this world.
(By the way, those painted nails weren’t mine. Hehehe)
Above is a photo of the Dakota as it appears through the trees of Strawberry Fields in Central Park. This photo was taken a few steps away from the “Imagine” mural.
The photo above was taken as I was about to leave the area. It shows West 72nd Street with the Dakota on the left and all the other residential and commercial buildings on it.
Although my visit was brief, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are still a lot of places around Manhattan that I’ve always wanted to visit but never really took the time to. I’m starting to think that having spent decades of my life focused on work, that it’s about time that I get off the fast lane every now and then to admire and learn more about the world around me.

The building was huge. If he and Yoko occupied the entire floor, it could be as big as a football field considering that building occupies an entire block!
And those painted nails weren’t mine either.
June 14, 2009 at 8:31 am |
Mari,
It is a huge building and one can just imagine the amount of floor space Yoko and her son now occupy on the 7th floor. The word “spacious” may even be an understatement.
Nope, those nails were definitely not yours.
Jared was a great tour guide, wasn’t he? There wasn’t a boring moment.
June 14, 2009 at 1:52 am |
Of course, the nails aren’t yours! And they’re painted shimmering blue. =) The nicest thing is that you were able to revitalize yourself by visiting the used to be loved place of the artist you like (big time!). =) Did you have your photo taken with “Imagine”?
June 15, 2009 at 7:56 am |
WitsandNuts,
Thanks. It was a much needed break from work. An additional day or two would have been better but that’s the downside of working for another person. Anyway, I digress but yes, it was pretty cool that I was finally able to get to see Mr. Lennon’s home.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of myself by the mural. Got too engrossed with the place that I forgot all about myself.
June 14, 2009 at 2:16 am |
“The Lennons reportedly bought the entire 7th floor of the building.”
Yup, they’re that rich, courtesy of you, me and millions of other people who admire him.
This to me is what I call a learning holiday. You learn new things while enjoying yourself. Just like visiting a museum.
June 15, 2009 at 7:58 am |
Blogusvox,
I agree. It was indeed like visiting a museum. The home must be huge. I can just imagine. No pun intended. Hehehe
June 14, 2009 at 2:55 am |
i also have a pic taken in central park with the dakota at the background but i never thought that that was it until i saw that second to the last pic.
what a beautiful structure.
June 15, 2009 at 8:00 am |
Carlotta,
It’s a very beautiful structure indeed. A number of celebrities call the Dakota home too like Lauren Bacall, a famous actress from the 1940s to the 1960s, and the singer Roberta Flack.
June 14, 2009 at 10:15 am |
the whole floor. in new york. wow. there was this book by this gay guy who said he decided to date the guy who later became his lifelong partner because on their first date, he learned that the guy owned a ladder. meaning he could afford a huge place in new york. haha.
i thought you started painting your nails blue.
when i grow up, i’ll visit new york. that will be one of my stops. first stop will be the ny public library.
June 15, 2009 at 8:04 am |
Atticus,
Hahaha I’ll only paint my nails blue when hell freezes over or when GMA grows another two inches.
New York is a very cool city and has lots to offer. The only downside to it is that it costs a pretty penny to live within Manhattan. But other than that, one can live in the city without ever needing a car. The NY Public Library is a nice building and is definitely worth a visit. I hope you get the chance to visit both the library and the city real soon.
June 14, 2009 at 5:39 pm |
interesting.. Glad they preserved the memory of John Lennon. I’m sure many Lennon fans visited the infamous landmark where he had his “last breath”.
Lennon and Ono got married at Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal and even up to now the hotel uses the famous event to advertise their name
June 15, 2009 at 8:06 am |
BW,
You’re right. John and Yoko did spend quite a bit of time in Canada too during the late 60s. They got married there and I believe it was in Toronoto where they held their famous “bed-in” for peace back in 1969.
I love Montreal. I love its old city district and I find the people very nice and friendly. I’d go back there for a visit in a heartbeat.

thanks for sharing!!
June 15, 2009 at 8:07 am |
RDL,
You’re very welcome. No problem at all.
June 14, 2009 at 11:49 pm |
Great tour and thanks for sharing it with us, mere mortals who can only imagine in our fertile minds how it is to actually set path on where the great Lennon spent his days.
June 15, 2009 at 8:09 am |
Daphne,
You’re very welcome.
It was a trip and a visit that I’ve long wanted to do and I’m glad that after many years, I was finally able to do it. Take care.
June 15, 2009 at 5:04 am |
like you, I am also a John Lennon fan. Thanks for sharing these photos and commentaries. It’s like I’ve been there myself.
June 15, 2009 at 8:12 am |
Rolly,
You’re welcome. It was my pleasure. I am hoping that someday, maybe after Ms. Ono’s gone, that the place (or at least a part of it) where she and John Lennon lived be opened as a museum. New York City was where John and Yoko not only lived but also where they worked as activists for various causes such as world peace and nuclear disarmament.
June 15, 2009 at 6:12 am |
.,cool pics…
the fourth and the last pic.- cool shots…
June 15, 2009 at 8:13 am |
Angelo,
Thanks for the compliments. I hope things have been well with you. Take care always.

ang ganda ng building!
thanks for sharing…paglaki ko punta ako dyan sa mga nishare mong lugar!
June 15, 2009 at 8:16 am |
P0kw4ng,
Maraming salamat, Ms. P. Sana makabisita ka dito in the near future. Marami kang mapapasyalan dito at marami ring iba’t ibang klaseng chibog dahil ang New York ay malaking melting pot. Bawa’t lahi ay may kanyang sariling restaurant dito.
Ginutom yata ako sa pagsagot sa comment mo. Hehehe
June 15, 2009 at 8:54 am |
pards, avid fan di ako ni john lennon. kaya mahaba rin ang buhok ko.he he he. swerte naman..
thanks for sharing this picture.
June 15, 2009 at 2:18 pm |
Ever,
Walang anuman, Pards. Oks lang.
Dati, binalak ko ring magpahaba ng buhok. Ang kaso nga lang eh hindi umubra. Hehehe
June 15, 2009 at 12:15 pm |
June 15, 2009 at 2:29 pm |
Ardyey,
That’s true, Pards. I live and work in the area. Ang kaso nga lang eh, ang naging focus ko in all the years I’ve lived here eh ang magtrabaho at maiset-up ang buhay ko dito. Through all that time, hindi ako gaano nakakapamasyal. I never even got the chance to go up the World Trade Center noong nandito pa sila. Hanggang ground floor lang ako.
But I’ll slowly change that. I’ve been here way too long and I think I now deserve the chance to see the sights around town. I also plan on visiting the UK someday so that I could tour Liverpool and London (Abbey Road Studios). Salamat.
June 15, 2009 at 3:49 pm |
Excellent post and pics, Pards!
Same here, who’s also a Beatles and a Lennon fan, I did not pass up the opportunity to visit his “Imagine” memorial and Dakota apartment (hanggang sa labas lang ako, syempre) while I was there in NJ. Alam mo, Pards, apart from the art museums there, Central Park and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are my most favorite places in NY! So, knowing about his “Imagine” memorial, pinuntahan ko ito. Summer noon and there were a lot of people– and even candles and flowers on his mosaic! Very touching! Pero tiyak na mas marami pang tao roon every October 9 and December 8.
Sayang nga lang at maagang nagpaalam si John…
Thanks again for your excellent post and pics!
Take care there, Pards! GOD Bless!!!
June 16, 2009 at 6:44 pm |
Jose,
I haven’t really had the chance to explore Central Park. I’ve driven through it but I haven’t really spent the time to take the scenery in. I should do so one of these days. Whenever friends and relatives from the Philippines come to visit, I always take them to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and have them sign the guest book there.
Sayang nga talaga, Pards, at maagang nawala si John. He could have given us more great songs to enjoy. Alas, that wasn’t meant to be. I agree with you that malamang eh dinudumog ng tao ang memorial niya on those dates that you mentioned.
Take care too, Pards. Keep the great art works coming.
June 16, 2009 at 9:47 am |
Hey wasn’t that the apartment where John, Yoko, staged the infamous bed-in? and where the song “give peace a chance” was first sung?
Pards, were you able to visit the Amsterdam Hilton hotel where John and Yoko, staged the infamous bed-in? and where the song “give peace a chance” was first sung?
Sorry for the first comment, I forgot that the bed-in was staged long before they brought the apartment, hehe…
June 16, 2009 at 7:19 pm |
Snglguy,
Pards, the infamous bed-in was held in Toronto. You’re right in that those bed-ins were staged in the late 1960s, when John was still with the Beatles. He moved to New York some time in 1971, more than a year after the Beatles broke up.
There’s an exhibit going on in downtown New York about John Lennon’s years in New York City. It is being held at the Rock n’ Roll Museum Annex. I plan to go there in the coming days.
June 16, 2009 at 4:47 pm |
I’m starting to post my NY photos in my photoblog. I was there in Central Park West, but lack of research coupled with very tight scheduling made me miss out on so much that NY could offer a voracious photoblogger.
June 16, 2009 at 7:21 pm |
Ewok1993,
New York does have a lot too offer to a photoblogger. There’s a lot of subjects to cover given its area and diversity. I am very much looking forward to seeing your NY-related posts.
June 17, 2009 at 2:42 am |
another lennon fan here. i made my pilgrimage to strawberry fields when i first visited the big apple in ‘05. i also dropped by at manny’s music, the guitar shop in manhattan which is said to be john lennon’s fave music store.
per our tour guide back then, you can easily tell yoko ono’s unit by its white panels/curtains.
just one note though, lennon was shot by chapman when he got out of the car after a recording session. it was almost 11 pm by then so there were no more autograph seekers. just chapman waiting for his prey to come back.
chapman was able to get lennon’s autograph in the morning though wherein another fan was able to take a pic of lennon & chapman together while john was in the process of signing the double fantasy album.
June 18, 2009 at 8:40 am |
Mitsuru,
How have you been, Pards? I hope things have been well with you.
You’re right. I wrote everything from memories of what I read about 20 years ago. As one can see in the picture, that particular entrance was manned by two guards. Now, I don’t know if they were manned back in those days but then, New York City was a lot less safer too during that time. Thus, it’s quite hard to imagine that there weren’t any guards around when Lennon was shot.
Thanks for the correction, Pards. I appreciate it. Take care.
June 17, 2009 at 4:26 am |
Great pictures and posts. While I am not a big john Lennon fan, I would love to see the Dakota next visit. NY is so huge that one need a lifetime to visit every single nook and cranny that matters!
June 18, 2009 at 9:20 am |
Mario,
How are you? Thanks for the compliment. You’re right in that New York City, given its cultural and ethnic diversity, has so many things to offer that it would probably take a lifetime to see and experience everything. The Dakota is in a very nice and quiet area. I hope you do have the chance to visit and see it soon. Take care.
June 17, 2009 at 1:54 pm |
If you happen to come by Strawberry Fields on the weekends (especially Sundays), it’s nice because there are always musicians there singing Beatles songs, and some of them — especially an outfit called The Meetles that plays in the subway — are very very good!
June 18, 2009 at 9:44 am |
Steve,
Thank you very much for sharing this information about the Meetles. I’ll definitely check them out when I return to Strawberry Fields.
Thank you very much for the visit. Much appreciated. Take care.
June 17, 2009 at 2:16 pm |
napakanta ka ba nung nakita mo yung “imagine”? ako oo eh hehe
June 18, 2009 at 11:33 am |
Dyanie,
Kumusta ka na, Ms. D? Actually, hindi ako napakanta. Nahiya ako eh. Hehehe
Biro lang. Sa totoo, since the place was called Strawberry Fields, iyon ang music na pumasok sa ulo ko habang nandoon ako sa park.
June 18, 2009 at 2:33 am |
Wow, so that’s where he lived. Looks like a really fancy place. I’ve been in Beatles mode recently, listening to their songs. “Imagine” is one of my favorites.
Welcome back!
June 18, 2009 at 2:59 pm |
Ms. K!
Yes, it is a fancy place that’s in a very upscale neighborhood. It’s also a pretty quiet area. I heard that John Lennon spent a lot of time in Central Park, especially after his son, Sean, was born.
Thanks and take care.
June 18, 2009 at 2:32 pm |
Cool Shots.. Hope I can see it personally. You’re a real John Lennon fan
June 18, 2009 at 3:02 pm |
Pickleminded,
Thank you very much for the compliment and for the visit. Both are very much appreciated. Take care.
June 19, 2009 at 11:03 am |
Hmmm… I just watched Across the Universe on HBO and now, I am having a photo tour of John Lennon’s former residence. And indeed he was right by saying that no man should be above others, I now have a new hero.
June 19, 2009 at 8:38 pm |
Jonathan,
It’s funny but I haven’t seen Across the Universe yet. I guess you can say that as far as matters related to the Beatles’ music, I am a purist. I tend to stick to the original.
Anyway, John Lennon was a great humanitarian. In a lot of ways, his widow, Yoko Ono, also deserves a lot of credit for supporting him in his fight for world peace and nuclear disarmament.
June 19, 2009 at 4:19 pm |
I was just thinking that it has been so long. His wife is still here with us of coz but it has been a long time yet the memory of him is still fresh in this world. Imagine is one of my fav songs
June 19, 2009 at 10:49 pm |
MyLongkang,
True. It’s been close to 30 years since he was shot. But his memory remains alive because of his music. Millions of Lennon fans today weren’t even born when he was killed.
Can’t blame you for loving “Imagine”. It is indeed a beautiful piece of music. Take care.
June 20, 2009 at 9:04 am |
I am good Pards, thanks for asking. I am like you that I don’t make time to see my home city; sort of taking it for granted since it seems to be “always here”.
When I started blogging and taking photography, I found the time to discover Sydney…and it’s great!
June 24, 2009 at 3:48 pm |
Jayashkal,
I took New York for granted too and as an example, never had the chance to go up the World Trade Center towers while they were still around because I assumed, incorrectly, that both buildings will always be here.
I promised myself that moving forward, I will take the time to explore New York.
Thanks and I’m glad to know that you and your family are well. Take care.
June 20, 2009 at 10:36 pm |
I’ve been to Manahattan a few times before but I never knew there’s a place there where John Lennon lived in. Maybe it’s because I’m not really a fan of him. Hehe. Thanks for sharing.
June 24, 2009 at 3:49 pm |
Abaniko,
No problem and welcome back to blogging, Pards! Long time, no read! Take care.
June 21, 2009 at 8:43 am |
ganun ba..pwede na siguro tayong magtayo ng banda pag nagkataon kung humaba rin ang buhok mo..ha ha ha.
June 24, 2009 at 8:10 pm |
Ever,
Sige. Magpapahaba na rin ako ng buhok. Gagayahin ko rin ang salamin ni Pareng John. Hehehe
June 22, 2009 at 4:11 am |

June 24, 2009 at 8:11 pm |
AJ,
Hello to you, too. Thank you very much for the very kind words and for the visit. I appreciate them a lot. Please stop by anytime. Take care.
June 22, 2009 at 8:49 am |
we have something in common. he was my favorite beatle. i like the imagine shot with the painted nails.
imagine dying on december 8. he was really taken.
there’s this movie that toyed with the thought that paul visited john in that apartment. they jammed, talked, smoked, and walked around central park.
how i wish i can do the same. maybe someday.
June 24, 2009 at 8:14 pm |
Beatburn,
I did see that movie too where Paul stopped by John’s department and toyed around with the idea of reuniting the band. But in the end, they decided that even though they still enjoyed each other’s company, they had found new partners whose company they enjoyed more, their respective spouses.
I do hope that you get the chance to see this place someday.
June 22, 2009 at 11:34 pm |

Maraming salamat sa papuri at sa iyong pagbisita. I appreciate both a lot. Feel free to stop by anytime. Ingat.
June 28, 2009 at 9:52 pm |
Thank you so much for sharing this. The Dakota is a place I have wondered about for so many years. I hope to see all of this for myself one day soon!
