Office was closed Friday before the 4th of July and thus, I decided to do my little part to help revive the badly ailing American economy. I went out this morning to do a little shopping.
I was badly in need of a few pairs of pants and some shirts and thus, with the weather cooperating, I drove out today to a small outlet center about a half hour’s drive from my place.
Since today was the start of the July 4th holiday weekend, a lot of stores were offering very good discounts on their merchandise. I bought a couple of pairs of cotton, wrinkle-free pants at a 40% discount at the Brooks Brothers outlet store shown above. One thing I’ve always done whenever I shop for clothes is never pay for them at full price. I always wait for a Sale to come along before I shop for clothes.
A shot of a few more stores in the same section of the outlet center I was in. I got my shirts at a Timberland store in an adjacent section. Timberland had a good deal going for I was able to buy my shirts at a 30% discount.
I wish I could show you more pictures but this photo and the one before it were the only ones I took while I was shopping. However, both photos reveal a few things about me as a shopper.
You don’t see a crowd of shoppers in either picture. Whenever I go shopping, I always make it a point to go early. I often begin my shopping around 10 or 10:30 a.m., way before the crowds roll in. I can’t stand crowded areas and situations because I have a very low tolerance for the rude and uncivilized behavior a good number of misguided animals (yes, that’s what I call them) display when they take advantage of such situations for their own selfish ends. Thus, I avoid them like the plague.
In addition, shopping early provides me with three distinct benefits. First is the availability of parking spaces. I get to choose where to park my car instead of fighting for a spot or spending a good amount of time looking for one . Second, I often get better service from sales personnel. At that early hour, they’re still usually in a pleasant mood due to the fact that they still haven’t been stressed out by unpleasant, whiney or rude customer(s). Third, beating other customers to a store means I have more and better items in front of me to choose from. This is the part I love best because a lot of the “nice” or “nicer” stuff are still available for sale. I hate having to come in late in the afternoon or in the evening and having to deal with “leftover” stuff. At that point only the not-too-good items are left. No way.
Lastly, as a shopper, I’m the “in and out” type. Before I drive out to a store or a mall, I make a list of the items I need. I then drive out to the place and once there, I go straight to the rack, aisle, or section that has the stuff I need. I pick the stuff up, inspect it, pay, and head for the nearest exit. It is quite rare that I hang around a store to check the other items on display.
Thus, with my shopping ways, I am often done before lunch time. I then treat myself to a good lunch as a reward to myself (naks!) for yet another relatively stress-free shopping experience before I head home.
This is how I shop. How about you?

Nice! Your post just inspired me to spend, spend, spend. I’ll do that tomorrow. My top priorities are DVDs, magazines and bread. Maybe some toiletries too, but they can wait. Ehehe.
July 5, 2009 at 9:02 am |
Andy Briones,
You’ll make the toiletries wait?? Hahaha I found that line very funny.

I normally shop with a list in my mind. With regard to going for huge sale, I used to be an impulsive buyer when I was younger. I’ve accumulated some stuff that I’ve not really used. Now, I only windowshop when there are ongoing sale. I only buy when something is so irresistible.
July 5, 2009 at 9:04 am |
WitsandNuts,
I have a tendency to be an impulsive buyer when it come to DVDs, books and magazines. But when it comes to DVDs and books, I often get them online from Amazon.com where they always sell at a price lower than brick-and-mortar stores.

You should franchise your own Brooks Bros and Timberland!
I bought some stuff today as well. I got them at 50% discount. Beat that! It’s a Spanish brand but as always, made in China.
July 5, 2009 at 9:10 am |
Mari,
Maybe I should consider starting a franchise, right?
I’m very particular regarding the feel and texture of clothes and BB and Timberland are the only two brands that have the type of cloth that I really like.
Those clothes must be real nice and once again, you got a better deal than the one I got.

typical men shopping habit.:P
i dream of a day when i could be at the mall as soon as it opens. it’s definitely less stressful. when i’m shopping in a company of a guy, i always suggest that i meet him at a coffee shop later.:D oh, and i love to shop in outlet stores when i’m in the US! nasa cloud 9 ako pag nasa outlet store (lol). sabi nga ng friend ko when he accompanied me to an outlet store in Sfo, sa entrance pa lang, may twinkle na ang mga mata ko (lol).
July 5, 2009 at 9:15 am |
Luna Miranda,
Hahaha You’re so right about that!
The only establishments I can spend hours in in a mall are a DVD/Music store and a bookstore. Other than those, I can’t be bothered to spend a minute more than I have to in any store.
I love shopping at outlets too. The prices are much cheaper even when you compare them to the ones those same stores offer in the Philippines. This fact was a very pleasant surprise to the SO.

wow buti ka pa may technique kung pano magshopping. as in detailed pa hehe. i have no patience whatsoever in shopping. but if i have no choice na, for example like my jeans are hole-y or there are some blouses that got worn out, that’s the time i buy. as a rule i only go clothes shopping twice a year, for two reasons: my birthday and christmas
July 5, 2009 at 9:29 am |
Carlotta,
The technique evolved over the years. Naks! Hehehe Seriously, experience is the best teacher as they say and thus, I simply applied what I learned to how I now shop. I try to avoid stressful situations whenever and wherever I can.
Like you, I only shop for clothes whenever I need to replace an old one. I don’t accumulate and maintain a closet full of hardly used clothes.
July 4, 2009 at 11:43 am |
depende sa mood. hehe. kanina napabili ako ng sling bag. wala sa plano ko pero astig talaga yung bag. pang-yuppie.
pag gadgets naman isip-isip muna. i read a LOT of reviews. opinions from friends. at magbilang ng pera. hehe.
have a great weekend!
July 5, 2009 at 9:33 am |
The Scud,
Pareho tayo when it comes to gadgets. I do some research first through reviews and feedback from co-workers who are also into gadgets. And yes, nagbibilang din muna ako ng pera in order to make sure na hindi magkakaroon ng adverse impact sa food budget ko. Hehehe
Thanks and have a great week ahead, Pards!
July 4, 2009 at 10:19 pm |
I don’t really like to shop. I find it too much of a hassle to pick clothes, wait in line at the ladies room only to find out the clothes I picked make me look like a stuffed squid! hehehe
So if and when I feel the urge to purchase something new, I try it on if it is comfy I buy it kaagad.
July 5, 2009 at 9:43 am |
Daphne,
I am also about comfort when it comes to clothes. I want to make sure that every piece of clothing I buy will be used many times. I want it to be worth every single cent I paid for it.
So yes, like you, once I find one that fits me comfortably, binibili ko rin agad and then lalabas na ako ng store. Tapos.
July 5, 2009 at 1:05 am |
July 5, 2009 at 10:42 am |
Ever,
Pards, pagdating naman sa sine, baliktad tayo. Last showing ang pinupuntahan ko pero for the same reason din.
July 5, 2009 at 1:40 am |
i prefer to shop when there are less customers. and also, i prefer to shop with a list. Papsie doesnt do that and he shops for hours! goodness. he compares prices according to weight. imagine that. an hour will take 3 hours for him to finish.
July 5, 2009 at 11:05 am |
Bing,
Wow. I find it hard to do what your Papsie is doing. I also factor in the value of my time when I do my shopping. There are only so many hours in the day and there are other things I need to attend to at home. Thus, I limit the time I spend to shopping to only what is necessary in order for me to get other things done.
July 5, 2009 at 3:13 am |
galing ng tactic mo sa pamimili, ah. tama ka, maraming makulit (animals) pag nagsa-shopping at nakakainis silang kasabay, lalo na iyong ayaw magbigay ng space para sa ibang gustong tumingin ng merchandise.
like some of the ladies above, i don’t enjoy shopping. it’s a chore for me. but if i do have to, i have a list
and i rarely stray from it. i know, we don’t sound like women but, believe us, not all women are born shoppers.
now, if i find myself in a bookstore, especially second hand bookstores, there you will find the evil shopper in me. *evil grin* i sometimes have as many as five books with me when i leave.
July 5, 2009 at 12:03 pm |
Atticus,
I started doing my early shopping at SM Megamall back in the early 1990s. That’s when I realized that shopping could be a hassle-free experience if one goes to a mall at an early hour.
But yes, bookstores and music stores are a different matter altogether for me. Those are stores where I can hang out for hours. They are also where the impulsive buyer in me comes out.
July 5, 2009 at 5:42 am |
Two of the reasons why I prefer to shop (either for groceries or what-nots) during odd hours of the weekdays are: less crowds and no parking hassles. Also, the sales clerks are easier to talk to when business is slow…
July 5, 2009 at 12:13 pm |
Snglguy,
Very true, Pards. Not too many irritants during those odd hours. The last thing we need is to come home in a foul mood simply because some people made sure that our shopping experience was a stressful one.
July 5, 2009 at 5:25 pm |
Pards, remember the song of Chicago “Saturday in the park, I think it was the 4th of July.”
My late father told me that it was July 4, the original celebration on Independence day ng Pilip[inas but it was change by former President Diosdado Macapagal.
July 6, 2009 at 12:27 am |
Ysrael,
Your late father was right. The original date of our independence was also July 4. It was on July 4, 1946 when the Americans granted us our independence. But GMA’s father, the late President Diosdado Macapagal, changed the date back to June 12 when Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence in Cavite in 1898.
Some people may not agree with me but I’ve always thought and believed that we never really gained independence back in 1898. It was in 1946 when full control of government affairs was handed to Filipinos. Aguinaldo never had total control over the entire archipelago back in June 1898.

.,and that’s what i call a ‘wise shopper’…:)
with discounts flooding everywhere for good stuffs i think no one can go wrong…
i don’t really like shopping, unless it’s that much needed… Lol… Of course i also wait for sales and discount offers…:)
there was a time when a girl friend asked me to accompany her to find a pair of good shoes, it took her i think three malls and 5 different stalls in the arcade but then we have not got even a single shoe….:D
(Some girls wastes so much time in shopping… and i do not really understand why… they know what to buy, they’ve got some money for it, but then it still consumes a day for a one, single stuff…Lol… peace yo!)
wish you can post what you’ve bought…:D -just to know your taste… >curious
July 6, 2009 at 12:33 am |
Angelo,
I bought a couple of khaki pants, 3 striped polo shirts, and 3 long-sleeved shirts. All shirts had collars so that I could also wear them to the office.
My taste in clothes is pretty conservative. I really don’t have anything that would make me stand out in the crowd. Hehehe
July 5, 2009 at 8:53 pm |
Love these US outlet malls man. We go across the border at Bufallo, NY. This month we will be travelling to New Hampshire and the last time we were there in 06′ I remembered there was zero tax levied on our purchases
Unreal. I’m looking forward to the trip
July 6, 2009 at 12:34 am |
BW,
You can also try the outlets in New Jersey, Pards. New Jersey doesn’t impose any tax on the sale of clothes and shoes.
July 6, 2009 at 12:14 am |
I love going to outlet malls and that’s one of the things I wish we have a lot of in the Philippines. Like you, I shop early too in order to get the good buys.
July 6, 2009 at 12:38 am |
Em,
How are you? The prices at the outlets here are truly very competitive. They even compete well against the prices in the Philippines and other Third World countries. After all the discounts are taken, the prices of clothes and shoes end up much cheaper than in other countries. Ironic but true.
July 6, 2009 at 12:41 am |
What you described is a typical male shopper, pards. Go in – select – pay – get out. The only difference between us is the time. Here, shops closes every prayer time and I hate to wait. So we usually shop in the evening (8 pm) after the last prayer.
July 8, 2009 at 7:43 am |
Blogusvox,
That’s true although I have a number of male friends who are shoppers who love to hang out in malls for hours long after they’re shopping’s done. I don’t know. Maybe they’re out to scope the women there. Hehehe
July 6, 2009 at 1:32 am |
i do the same thing most of the time but when i just want to stroll for sportswear, i sometimes shop hop. travel magazine is my addiction. better than drugs definitely.
July 8, 2009 at 7:44 am |
Dong Ho,
I go for business magazines, history books and biographies. I used to spend a lot of time in bookstores when I was still living in Manila. That was the only place I could really while away the time while waiting for a date. Hehehe
July 6, 2009 at 1:59 am |
I haven’t shopped in a while (for clothes that is), but I usually shop online now. I have developed some aversion to malls. Although I could stay int he food court for a long time
But outdoor market/flea markets are another story. I could linger on and simply browse. I think I am allergic to something in the HVAC units in the malls. I usually get headaches and congestion after a few minutes in the clothing and fragrance section.
July 8, 2009 at 10:34 am |
Ewok1993,
I actually enjoyed going to outdoor markets and flea markets (in the few times that I have) because they do offer a lot of stuff that I don’t see in malls.
That’s another thing, by the way. I find malls pretty boring because after a while, it gives that once-you’ve-seen-one-you’ve-seen-them-all kind of feeling. They all seem to offer the same stuff. I’d rather go to a small shop in a small town’s downtown area because those small shops seem to offer a lot more interesting and unique stuff.
July 7, 2009 at 8:22 pm |
nice place to shop! hahaha hhhmmm… when i think about shopping… I just grab my bag and wallet and go!! hahaha that’s basically how i shop. hahaha
July 8, 2009 at 10:49 am |
Piapot,
Hahaha I must say that your approach is simple yet effective.
July 8, 2009 at 9:32 pm |
I can shop til i drop. I look at it as a sport.
July 8, 2009 at 9:55 pm |
RDL,
Hahahahaha Geez. You must be quite a competitive shopper then!
I will concede defeat to you every time. Hehehe
July 19, 2009 at 1:47 am |
those didn’t look like shops at all (think SM malls hehehehehe). i thought they were judicial courts from the outside ;p
July 23, 2009 at 7:35 am |
Miki,
True.
It was designed to look like a village back in American colonial times.
July 23, 2009 at 4:53 am |
I guess you are a typical guy… in and out sa shopping otherwise you’ll end up spending on unplanned purchases. I do the same, I have an “objective” when coming to a shop – especiall yin a crowded mall. I would rather sit in front of a pc and fb, blog or just surf the net… heheheee. Cheaper, unless one is shopping online!
I think I’ve been to these shops – I’ve been to Haverstraw; a friend lives there to this day! A favourite of my wive and daughter – Century 21 – that’s the reason we didn’t managed to go up the World Twin Towers. They’d rather shop across!
July 23, 2009 at 8:32 am |
Mario,
I took the Twin Towers for granted. Since I live in the area, I always felt that there will always be a day to come and go to the top of those towers. I didn’t realize that a bunch of Saudis had other things in mind. Thus, it’s one spot I never got to visit here.
Regarding your wife and daughter. It just goes to show what their priorities are. Hahaha
