Downright Obscene

GMA SurfingThis brief article came out in today’s edition (August 7) of the New York Post criticizing the amount of money our dear President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) spent on a party for her entourage.  The party was held at the very upscale club called Le Cirque.  The report also said that several bottles of very expensive wine were ordered that pushed the evening’s dinner tab to around $20,000.

This must be the President’s way of congratulating herself and her large entourage for a job very well done.  I don’t know how big her entourage was but it smacks of poor taste and judgment to host such a lavish party on a trip whose main purpose was to schmooze with a new American President in order to obtain hundreds of millions of dollars more in new economic and military aid.

I have nothing against throwing a party for one’s staff or supporters.  Any leader is entitled to do that and a good leader should do that as a sign of his/her appreciation to his/her staff for a job well done.  It’s a morale booster.  However, the reason why GMA suffers from a serious and irreparable image problem is that she has seriously flawed political instincts.  Throwing a party at an upscale New York club shows a serious lack of sound judgment and/or gross insensitivity on her part.  In a city like New York, there are a lot of places where she could have thrown a nice party that would have cost the Filipino taxpayers a lot less.

Even if somebody else had organized the party for her, she should have put her foot down and asked the organizers to select a more moderately priced venue instead.  She should have been extremely mindful of the negative message and image that will be sent when a leader from a poor Third World country hosts a party in a ritzy club where expensive wine was flowing like water.  This is a public relations disaster and she should have known better.

The late Senator Jose Diokno used the word “obscene” to describe the lavish parties that the Marcoses used to throw in Malacanang back in the 1970s and early 1980s.  Such parties were held at a time when the country was up to its eyeballs in debt and millions were going hungry.  It is sad, disappointing and extremely frustrating that 30 years later, in spite of all the worsening poverty around them, our leaders still haven’t learned a damn thing.

Reminds me of a Zimbabwe princess who is vacationing in HK and stays in one of HK’s posh hotels.

I think the lavish lifestyle of people in government position is inherent in third world countries. Sad.

    • panaderos Says:

      Mari,

It is sad that the President’s behavior is not unique among people in positions of power in Third World countries. It is a manifestation of weaknesses in those countries’ political institutions. A lot of Third World leaders tend to quickly forget that they are in a leadership position to serve their people and not to lord it over their countrymen.

  2. ewok1993 Says:

That is indeed in poor taste. She should replace/revamp her set of advisers for this boo-boo, don’t you think?

    • panaderos Says:

      Ewok1993,

She should replace her advisers but I don’t believe she will ever do that. She rewards their personal loyalty with her loyalty and that’s why her administration has grown so corrupt. She would rather go down in flames defending them and the party they had in New York than to admit to an awful lapse in judgment.

  3. snglguy Says:

Hay nako, what else is new? It has been a habit of almost every elected Philippine official since Marcos to waste taxpayer’s money on useless junkets and throw lavish parties for their “amuyongs”.

    • panaderos Says:

      Snglguy,

True. It sadly brings back to mind what former Senate President Jose Avelino (Liberal Party) said back in the late 1940s in response to widespread accusations of graft and corruption that were being hurled against the unpopular Quirino Administration, “What are we in power for?”

It is disgusting that a lot of our political leaders seem to have the same thing in mind once they’ve assumed the reins of power. There seems to be no end in sight to this national rape.

  4. aLiNe Says:

TSKTSKTSK! while the whole nation is mourning, she’s partying…talaga nga naman o

    • panaderos Says:

      Aline,

True. The timing of the party itself was poor. The party itself was conducted in poor taste. It says a lot about GMA and why she is deeply unpopular.

And we haven’t even talked about the shenanigans of her husband and sons. She has shamed the Macapagal name. Her late father, though not perfect, was never this bad.

  5. Daphne Says:

Oh well – same antics, different administration! A never ending cycle of greed, power tripping et al.

    • panaderos Says:

      Daphne,

The sad thing is because all these people are part of the same social circles. They simply take turns. The National Treasury becomes their personal bank account.

One can just imagine the hundreds of billions of dollars our country has lost over the years due to corruption. This is money that could have gone a long way if it had been used to fund economic development projects.

  6. Andy Says:

Ohmygod. Horrible, horrible picture. Is that our beloved president having a blast at the bitch, er, beach?

  7. Lester Says:

    I almost puked.

  8. p0kw4ng Says:

    • panaderos Says:

      P0kw4ng,

Hahahaha Siya nga iyong nasa pekpektyur na iyan! :D

Kadire ‘no? Hay.

  9. thescud Says:

wala na talagang magawang tama si gloria. most recently the National Artists brouhaha. Then the $20,000 spent on a “victory” party. That’s almost 1 million pesos.

    • panaderos Says:

      The Scud,

Wala talaga, Pards. Palpak ang diskarte eh. Mahilig masyado mamulitika. There’s a moment she needs to be a politician and there’s a moment when she needs to be a national leader. In a time of crisis like the present, she ought to be more of a leader than a poll-driven politician. But even as a politician, she has proved to be an awful one. Hay

  10. bing Says:

siya talaga yan, pokwang, saw it in one of the papers before.

downright obscene, i agree. maybe she was thinking, ‘and because you people of the Philippines always try to bring me down, i’ll go down with your money!’ pathetic soul. kaya lang, what is new? she and her cohorts relish the idea that they can do anything they want with our hard earned money.

    • panaderos Says:

      Bing,

I expected a lot from her being the daughter of a former President. Her father did a decent job as a President from 1961-1965. The country enjoyed good economic growth during that time. I thought that GMA would follow in the footsteps of her late father and be a good President.

However, in my opinion, she let her husband, the so-called First Gentleman, run wild with his own corrupt dealings. She’s also letting her bratty sons have their way in Congress. Instead of producing a decent record like her father, she let her endless politicking and corrupt family drag the Macapagal name into the mud. I can’t wait for her term to be over.

  11. angelo...;) Says:

.,well, she didn’t even took a lengthy time in visiting the remains of Pres. Cory… now I know why… She and her cabinet members were all tired (not because of the long hours of travel but tired from a very cussing party in the U.S.)…

on the other hand, it’s her last term naman na already… magpakaligaya na siya…

who knows, it might be her ‘last merrymaking…’ >:)surf’s down!…:D

    • panaderos Says:

      Angelo,

I do hope that we’re into the last few months of her term. We need a fresh face with fresh ideas. I also hope that that person would have the credibility and heart to do what is right for the country.

There are rumors of backroom dealings going on in order to allow GMA to extend her term in office. I won’t be surprised if the motivation behind it is the desire to stem off the many corruption lawsuits that will definitely be filed against her and her uncontrollable husband.

  12. witsandnuts Says:

Whoever paid for the bill, the dinner really came at a bad timing = bad taste.

    • panaderos Says:

      WitsandNuts,

True. One would expect that these people were intelligent enough to know how to act appropriately given the circumstances. But I guess, the desire to enjoy the things taxpayer money can buy was a lot stronger than the wisdom to exercise prudence at a financially difficult time.

  13. cza Says:

hmmm.. talk about another bad decision on her part. kakaiba tlaga! :P

    • panaderos Says:

      Cza,

Palpak dumiskarte talaga. Being the President, I hold her to a higher standard. Plus, she’s been the leader for almost 10 years now. I’m not willing to cut her any slack anymore. Out of control pa rin. Hay.

  14. dyosa Says:

    Why am I not surprised?

A huge percentage of the Philippine population is poor and broke. Well, she and her entourage aren’t. So, paki nya di ba?

Sad sad world we’re living in.

    • panaderos Says:

      Dyosa,

It’s so sad really. If ever I have to choose one thing that needs to be changed in our Constitution, it is for the term of a President to be reduced to 4 years instead of 6. Six years is way too long for our people to suffer under a corrupt and unpopular administration.

  15. chiquesan Says:

Wika nga ng mga ‘Kano, GMA “is the gift that keeps on giving.”

  16. AJ Says:

we’re learning a new term here,

i jst wondered what “good” those travel abroad of our imminent dignitaries, headed of course by madame herself really brings to RP.??

i jst wondered evenmore, if the govt funds they brought and spent with them will be instead use to create jobs to the myriad of unemployed in the country, then Juan De La Cruz will b happier.

    obscene indeed. rgds, sir.

    • panaderos Says:

      AJ,

The trips do bring the country some good because some trade agreements get signed during those trips. Some aid commitments are also obtained from foreign governments. However, some of the funds, not all, do end up being used to either fund projects or to purchase much needed military/police equipment. However, our country has such a weak control process that a significant portion of this aid end up in the pockets of corrupt politicians and their cohorts in both business and government. Lord knows how many billions of dollars we have lost to corruption over the years since the country became independent in 1946. The amount must be staggering.

  17. rdl Says:

    Awful!

  18. bw Says:

I look at the Le Cirque menu it seems to be pretty ordinary, serving $35 dinners. Perhaps it was a large entourage composed of RP delegates and embassy staff and some guests. $20 grand might be large but if we don’t know how many people were around, we won’t know if it is really obscene or not.

    • panaderos Says:

      BW,

You’re right in that I don’t really know how many people were in that party and if somebody else had organized and paid for the whole thing. However, if somebody else indeed footed the bill as Malacanang claims, it still raises serious ethical questions because the entire party served as a gift to the President.

Given her position, the President should have been more sensitive to appearances of impropriety. It would not have been impolite of her to ask the organizers to tone down the party given the current situation in the world.

  19. Abaniko Says:

She does this while countless Filipinos are hungry. Disgusting!

  20. BlogusVox Says:

There are 30 people in her entourage. That’s around $666/person plus tip. Based on what bw said, either she gave an extravagant tip or somebody made a deal and pocketed the change! : )

O di kaya, yung iba merong side order. Pang “take home”! : D

  21. madbong Says:

the palace replied that the dinner wasn’t paid by the pilipino taxpayer. even if this is from private funds, i agree that it still sends a negative message.

btw, nung nakita ko pichur ni arroyo dito sa post mo, guess which part i looked at first hahaha

  22. Atticus Says:

    • panaderos Says:

      Atticus,

Oo nga. Mukhang manhid na nga siya. She has a very stubborn streak.

In exchange for that amount, she ought to be questioned as to what she promised those people in return. Will they be awarded lucrative government positions or contracts? Will their business be given special privileges or protection under a law to be rammed through Congress? She must think that we’re all idiots. The end of her term won’t come soon enough for me. Hay. :(

  23. ever Says:

kung hindi ko napansin yung nunal, kala ko kung sino lang..he he he.

  24. beatburn Says:

    obscene nga.

    she’s an insensitive bitch.

  25. flamindevil Says:

reading this post is like reading an editorial column in a broadsheet. very insightful. :p

    • panaderos Says:

      FlaminDevil,

Thanks for the compliment, Pards. I was just expressing my displeasure with GMA’s insensitivity.

I hope things have been well with you. Take care.

  26. ever Says:
