A favorite Rolling Stones song from 1965:
I wasn’t yet born when this song became a hit. In fact, I was already in high school when I first heard it. This was back in the pre-CD days. I had bought an LP (long playing record) which was a compilation of the Rolling Stones’ greatest hits. I bought it from a classmate whose father owned and ran a record store in Cubao, Quezon City. There was only one reason why I bought that LP and that was because I enjoyed listening to “Satisfaction”, one of the Stones’ earliest rock hits and the only Stones song I was familiar with.
The LP proved to be my introduction to other Rolling Stones tunes such as Paint It Black, Get Off My Cloud, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, and Gimme Shelter, to name a few. Listening to the other tracks on the album, As Tears Go By was kind of a surprise because the musical style was a departure from the rock and blues format the Stones used in all of their other songs.
The song was a ballad and was written by band members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards along with their then manager, Andrew Loog Oldham. It was written in 1964 but did not become a hit for the Rolling Stones until its release late the following year as part of their album “December’s Children (And Everybody’s)”.
Though simple, the words are thoughtful and reflective and speak of lost innocence. I enjoyed its music when I was in my teens. I appreciate its meaning now that I’m in my forties.
Let me just share a video of a live performance of this song from back in 1966. It’s hard to give it a good listen because of the screaming fans but it’s nice to see a young Mick Jagger and Keith Richards back in the day when both were still in their early 20s.
It is the evening of the day,
I sit and watch the children play;
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me;
I sit and watch
As tears go by.
My riches can’t buy everything,
I want to hear the children sing;
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground;
I sit and watch
As tears go by.
It is the evening of the day,
I sit and watch the children play;
Doin’ things I used to do
They think are new;
I sit and watch
As tears go by.

Lawstude,
Oo nga, Pards. He and Keith were in their mid-twenties at that time. It’s amazing that they’ve lasted this long, right?

Along with the beatles, I’m a fan of rolling stone, through and through. IMO, Mick is really a good composer. Like Bob Dylan, his lyrics makes you think. Take for example their song – Sympathy for the devil.

Blogusvox,
I’m a late bloomer when it comes to the music of the Stones but I totally agree with you. Mick and Keith are both very good composers. Although I’m a big Beatles fan, in my humble opinion, as live performers, I think the Stones were much better.
I like SFTD too. I also love Beast of Burden and Brown Sugar.

I made my boyfriend watch the video and he loved it. =D He even tried to look for other songs on youtube. I will never get the ’screech’ style of singing, but I do love their tunes and lyrics.

Cza,
Nice!
I’m glad that you and your boyfriend enjoyed the song. It does have nice words too and they do take on a lot more meaning as one gets older like I do.
Take care, Ms. C.

Aline,
I do hope that you’ll get the chance to view it later. It’s a nice song.

Ever,
Oo nga, Pards. Matagal ko na ring hindi nadinig ito hanggang nakita ko iyong Rolling Stones CD ko (Hot Rocks) about two weeks ago. Napa-reminisce din ako.
Ingat, Pards.

R-Yo,
Amen to that, Pards.

mick is a good composer and singer. i am not an avid fan but some of their songs i like.
how are you?

Bing,
Mick’s also a very smart guy and it shows in how he’s managed the Stones business for the past four decades. The band’s members have become millionaires many times over because of how he’s meticulously managed their finances. He has that rare combination of artistic and business smarts.
I’m fine naman, thanks. I have just been busy with both life and work these past couple of months that it has prevented me from doing a decent amount of blogging. But I’m ok, thanks for asking. Take care always.

ah, brilliant. simply brilliant. ang galing nila talaga. kaya grabe ang staying power nila, at legend sila.
bow ako.

Atticus,
So true. It’s scary to think that they are about to enter their SIXTH decade in the rock music business. Quite unimaginable years ago that a rock band would still be performing where its members are about to enter their 70s. But as a testament to their talent, they still manage to produce quality songs. Awesome talaga.

Always loved that song when I was in HS, didn’t know for a while it was by the Rolling Stones, thought it was by the Byrds.
I’m a oldies but goodies freak so you can ask me a real good one, I’m sure I have it. Most of what I have are selections.
Huwag magtanong about Rap ha, ala ako nun, hehe….

TruBlue,
Nice to know that you’re also an oldies but goodies fan like me. The bulk of my favorites are songs and artists from the 1960s and 1970s. I guess you and I would have a lot of fun talking about that music over a “few” bottles of beer.

back in the 90s, im my high school years, we loved listening to johnpauljohn and ringo – which is i think 2-3 decades past already.
not so familiar with the rolling stones, but upon visiting your site, wow, sa kanila pala ito! haaaay! matanda na nga ako.
November 24, 2009 at 10:33 am |
Rheiboy17,
Matanda na rin ako, Pards. I’m starting to feel my age physically. Hehehe
November 23, 2009 at 11:06 am |
when I heard this song many years ago, I couldn’t believe the Stones sang it. Totally out of their music genre
November 24, 2009 at 10:40 am |
BW,
So true, Pards. I think they have one other hit song “Lady Jane” that, like this song, deviates from their rock format.
November 24, 2009 at 10:27 am |
nice lyrics and melody. What more can one ask for? I was a toddler when I first heard this song via a 38 rpm record made from taiwan. It was even colored orange instead of black.
November 24, 2009 at 10:42 am |
Rolly,
I still have my LPs of the Beatles and the Stones. I still have my old Pioneer turntable and AM/FM Stereo Receiver at my parent’s house. I hope to have them brought over here someday. Not that hard to find a shop over hear that could fix the old stereo system.
November 25, 2009 at 6:37 pm |
Another song that is totally out of their genre is “Lady Jane”, oops… you mentioned that na pala, hehe. But really, many people are surprised that a rocker like Mick “the lips” Jagger can come up with ballads like the two songs mentioned here.
November 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm |
Snglguy,
True.
Makes one wish that he wrote more of such ballads. He could have revealed more of his thoughtful and sentimental side to us but then, maybe that’s just not his style.

Panaderos, I never paid any attention to them until the 1980’s. Then I was approaching high school, and these men were a bunch of old rockers….. It makes me laugh to realize that was 26 years ago.
I do love the song. I appreciate you sharing.
Maligayang pasko, my friend. I hope this is a good Christmas month for you
